Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) recently invited submissions on an application to change the Food Standards Code to allow food derived from a genetically modified soybean line.

FSANZ Chief Executive Officer Steve McCutcheon said the application, from Dow AgroSciences Australia Limited, sought approval for food derived from soybean genetically modified to protect against several pests.

“This soybean line contains two insecticidal proteins to protect it against pests, including soybean looper, velvetbean caterpillar and tobacco budworm,” Mr McCutcheon said.

“The FSANZ safety assessment found no public health or safety concerns and that food from this soybean line is as safe for human consumption as food derived from conventional soybean.

“FSANZ welcomes comments from government agencies, public health professionals, industry and the community.”

The closing date for submissions is 17 December 2013.
