Syngenta expands canola portfolio in canada

Syngenta Canada announced the addition of SY4114 to its growing canola portfolio. Together with SY4135, this new canola variety complements the existing Syngenta canola portfolio of Helix® Vibrance® seed treatment, Touchdown Total® herbicide, Astound® fungicide and Matador® insecticide.

SY4114 is a mid-season, Genuity® Roundup Ready® hybrid canola variety that performs well across all growing zones in Western Canada. Rated R (resistant) for blackleg, SY4114 has demonstrated strong yield performance and very good standability versus checks in large-scale trials conducted across the Prairies, including the following data collected from 2012 third-party private trials:

•    Yield: 104% of  DEKALB® 73-45 (22 sites); 99% of DuPont Pioneer® 45H29 (14 sites)
•    Maturity: 0.9 days later than 73-45; 0.7 days earlier than 45H29
•    Height: 2 inches or 5.8 cm taller than 73-45; 5 inches or 12.7 cm shorter than 45H29
•    Lodging: +0.3 compared to 73-45 and 45H29

“Syngenta is very excited to continue the growth of our canola portfolio,” stated Duane Johnson, Head, Western Commercial Business Unit, Syngenta Canada. “SY4114 is a strong, new mid-season hybrid variety that will be available for sale in limited commercial quantities this fall for seeding in 2014.”

SY4114 is the second variety in the Syngenta canola seed offering that was announced in October 2012. Syngenta has a long history of participating in the Canadian canola segment with enabling technologies such as seed treatments, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. Experience and expertise gained from these products and from abroad, where Syngenta is a leading provider of canola-quality oilseed rape varieties, supports the delivery of a new seed portfolio for western Canadian growers.

“We will continue to introduce new hybrid varieties of canola that contain elite genetics and traits that deliver the greatest benefit to growers,” concludes Dave Sippell, Head of Diverse Field Crops, North America. “Our approach is to collaborate with a variety of providers and breeders to select the germplasm and traits that will deliver the greatest benefit to growers and commercialize the resulting varieties. This allows us to provide strong canola varieties that benefit producers in combination with our complete canola portfolio, recognizing that it is not just variety performance that growers assess to determine success, but the quality of their overall canola production experience.”
