As Uruguay moves from livestock farming to arable farming, cultivated area for summer crops has grown by almost half over 2007. According to Farming UK, Uruguay’s Ministry of Agriculture has reported 593,000 hectares (Ha) for the first summer crops currently planted in the country – an increase of 49% over the area planted in 2007. Summer crops in Uruguay include a 460,000 Ha wheat crop, and 121,000 Ha of malting barley.

The second summer crop will be even larger, at around 1,025,000 Ha. One major contributor are brewery contracts for beer making barley, which are currently at 155,000 Ha.

Winter crops – for which planting will start a few weeks from now – are also expected to increase this year; current forecasts aim for a 26% increase, to 773,000 Ha. Winter crops include sorghum, which has doubled; sunflower, growing by 70%; and soy, with a modest 8% increase expected. Customs figures place soy exports at 840,000 tons for 2008.

Even with increased acreage, however, farmers report that input costs such as fertilizers, fuel, seed, and chemicals are eroding anticipated net profits.
