The US Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) is holding back the release of a new biological pesticide until it knows more about the chemical’s effect on bees.

The Capital Press reports that manufacturer Certis USA will be delayed at least a year by new testing requirements.

Bee colony collapse disorder has been an increasing concern for beekeepers in Oregon in the past two years, but there is no clear cause.

The disorder received national attention in June when pesticides killed 50,000 bees in Wilsonville.

Certis says it is on the forefront of the EPA’s new standards, but expects to pass the stricter regulations.
