Balqis Agrotech Eyes Southeast Asia Market

KUALA LUMPUR- Johor-based organic fertiliser producer Balqis Agrotech aims to penetrate the Southeast Asia market in the near future after establishing a foothold in Brunei, Cambodia and Singapore.
Operations manager Zailani Othman said the company's Bio Strong Liquid and Bio-Compost organic fertilisers are made from worms imported from Indonesia and bred in their farm in Tampoi, Johor.
They boost yields and give better quality fruits and vegetables at lower cost, he said, adding it takes a week or two to process worms' castings before they can be made into organic fertiliser.
In addition, the fertilisers enhance soil aggregate stability and reduce erosion, he told Bernama at the Malaysia Argriculture, Horticulture & Agrotourism (MAHA) International Exposition 2012.
"The use of organic fertilisers reduces the need for chemical fertilisers and helps meet the growing demand for organic food," said Zailani.
The fertilisers add beneficial organisms and minerals to the soil, helping to stimulate plant growth, he added.
He said more farmers are using organic fertilisers for crops such as oil palm, rubber and cocoa, as well as for fruit trees such as rambutan and durian.
"Organic fertilisers cost less than chemical fertilisers and farmers do not need to apply fertilisers as often," said Balqis Agrotech director MD Anuar Yahya
