Brazil's drone imports reached US$16 million in the first five months of 2024, marking a significant 24.1% increase compared to the same period last year.
In terms of units, the growth was even more dramatic at 115%, according to data from the Foreign Trade Secretariat (SECEX).
Leonardo Baltieri, co-CEO of Vixtra, a Brazilian fintech specializing in financial solutions for importers, said these numbers reflect an expanding market and highlight the significant impact of drones across various sectors of the Brazilian economy, including agriculture, security, media, and entertainment.
In his view, the growing adoption of this technology is creating numerous opportunities for innovation and efficiency, transforming traditional manual practices and introducing new operational standards.
In Brazil's economy, the demand for drones has grown significantly in the agricultural sector. The equipment's use for crop monitoring, pest and disease identification, and terrain mapping contributes to more precise fertilizer and pesticide application. Additionally, drones collect data that help farmers make more informed decisions, resulting in increased productivity and early problem detection.
Drones have also transformed the media and entertainment industry, offering high-definition aerial angles and footage for films, commercials, and sporting events, enhancing productions' visual and creative quality. Furthermore, security forces are increasingly using drones to monitor large events and patrol hard-to-reach areas.
The study shows China has emerged as the most prominent drone exporter to Brazil. In the first months of 2024, 96% of the total import value came from Chinese manufacturers, up from 64% in 2023. The main types of imported drones are small (up to 7kg) and medium-sized (25kg to 150kg).
Baltieri expressed confidence in the Brazilian market outlook for the coming months. "In the last year alone, Vixtra helped finance 16% of drone imports. Thanks to innovative credit solutions and an integrated platform, we've played a crucial role in supporting the growth of drone imports in Brazil, facilitating financing access and improving import process efficiency," the foreign trade expert said.
In summary, the relevant increase in drone imports, both in value and volume, revealed a robust and growing trend in the national market and the importance of drone technology in key sectors of the country. The predominance of Chinese manufacturers and broad application across different industries indicate a significant evolution in how Brazil uses and benefits from this technology.
"With the forecast of continued growth in drone imports and support from specialized companies like Vixtra, Brazilian importers are well-positioned to take advantage of the opportunities offered by this emerging technology, driving economic and technological development in Brazil," Leonardo said in conclusion.
