Sinochem Crop Care hosted a significant event in Hefei, Anhui Province, on November 21, 2024, titled ″Pioneering Innovation, Influencing the World – The 威境 (WeiJing) Circle.″ 

This event highlighted the company’s new acaricide product, ″威境 (WeiJing),″ showcasing not only the product itself but also Yangnong Chemical’s capabilities in pesticide innovation. In the fast-paced world of agricultural technology, the innovation and development of pesticides are vital to ensuring healthy crop growth and boosting agricultural productivity. 

Innovation journey of Yangnong Chemical

As a subsidiary of Yangnong Chemical, Sinochem Crop Care is dedicated to advancing innovation, aiming to provide more advanced and technologically sophisticated products to benefit growers. Statistics reveal that fewer than 30 novel pesticides have been launched commercially in China, with only five achieving annual sales surpassing RMB100 million. Two of these were developed by agricultural research organizations, positioning them as leaders in pesticide innovation and industrial transformation in the country. 

Mu Hongyan, Product Manager at Sinochem Crop Care, noted that among their innovations, 双工9080 (tetrachlorantraniliprole), standing out as China’s first diamide insecticide, has been applied to treat 230 million mu with an annual usage of 1,300 tons; 宝卓 (cyetpyrafen), recognized as China's first acaricide with independent intellectual property rights, has proven efficient and safe over its nine years on the market, treating 101 million mu cumulatively with total sales reaching 1,600 KL. Now, the introduction of a new generation acaricide ″威境 (WeiJing)″ marks another milestone.

In the future, Yangnong Chemical will launch a series of innovative compounds, including 1877, 2184, and 2050, signaling a solid trajectory for pesticide innovation in China. Mu highlighted that the company’s innovative products not only cater to the domestic market but also possess robust competitiveness globally.

Research and development of the innovative acaricide bisulflufen

The global acaricide market continues to grow year by year; however, the availability of acaricides, particularly those with novel modes of action, remains limited. Resistance among mite populations develops rapidly, creating an urgent need for new acaricides with unique mechanisms to address such issues. 

Yu Haibo, Deputy General Manager of Shenyang Sinochem Agrochemicals R&D Co., Ltd and head of the New Product R&D Department, explained that innovation of bisulflufen spanned 12 years, from preliminary discovery to commercialization, involving rigorous research and screening at every stage. Bisulflufen is a trifluoroethyl thioether compound with a novel mode of action targeting both eggs and mites, offering rapid effectiveness and lasting impact. It shows no cross-resistance with existing acaricides and demonstrates excellent penetration properties while being safe for mammals and non-target organisms such as fish, bees, and Neoseiulus californicus. Field trials have confirmed bisulflufen’s stable efficacy against various agricultural mite pests.

Ren Yongjun, head of the Technical Department at Sinochem Crop Care, shared insights from a technical standpoint. Since 2017, he has collaborated with the Biological Testing Department, Technology Management Department, and external research institutions to conduct thousands of field trials, validating 威境 (WeiJing)’s performance across different crops, climatic conditions, and application scenarios, along with feedback from farmers. Extensive trial data underscores 威境 (WeiJing)’s high efficiency and reliability in practical applications.

In 2024, Sinochem Crop Care distributed nearly 3,000 liters of samples, allowing close to 10,000 farmers to experience the product firsthand. Three representatives from the trial participants shared their positive experiences, emphasizing 威境 (WeiJing)’s exceptional safety, thorough mite control, rapid effectiveness, and long-lasting residual activity. 

Xu Liming highlighted 威境 (WeiJing)’s superior performance against citrus red spiders, especially its safety, thorough mite control, rapid effectiveness, and long-lasting residual activity. Zhang Qian shared insights into the exceptional safety and efficacy of 威境 (WeiJing) on citrus crops. Luo Junqing noted 威境 (WeiJing)’s significant role in managing local citrus red spider issues from the perspective of a distributor.

Future development directions and strategic goals

Ding Song, General Manager of Sinochem Crop Care, reflected on the company’s journey in pesticide innovation and projected the market outlook for 威境 (WeiJing). Although 威境 (WeiJing) has not yet officially launched; its trial performance has already earned customer recognition and trust. He affirmed that Sinochem Crop Care will continue to increase its R&D investment to bring more innovative pesticides to market, addressing both market demands and resistance challenges.
