Through its digital platform Cropwise, 30 producers in 45 lots and over ten crops were measured.
Thus, the company achieved the baseline of its lots, the first step to determine the potential it has to capture carbon and set more concrete reduction and mitigation targets.
The Carbon Net program is part of one of Syngenta's Sustainability priorities, which seeks to regenerate soil and nature.
Syngenta, a leader in technology and applied innovation in the field, closed its first year of carbon footprint measurement with 10,000 hectares of more than ten crops of coarse and fine. Through its digital platform Cropwise, 30 producers in 45 lots were measured.
During this first year, the company achieved the baseline of its lots, the first step to determine the potential it has to capture carbon and set more concrete reduction and mitigation targets.
The Carbon Net program is part of one of Syngenta's Sustainability priorities, which seeks to regenerate soil and nature. It proposes to work on the measurement of the carbon footprint and help producers transition to carbon-neutral agriculture.
Carbon neutrality implies achieving a net result of zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, releasing into the atmosphere the same amount of gases that are absorbed by other means. Under this premise, the agricultural sector is one of the links in the economic and productive chain that has a huge challenge in the search for contributing to this global trend.
During this first year, the company accompanied producers from different productive areas in their first measurement of emissions from practices carried out, and 2 were analyzed together to determine the sources of the highest emissions in order to work on their subsequent reduction.
"Carbon Net uses the Cropwise platform, with which we seek to facilitate data loading and for producers to have traceability of all practices carried out in their field in order to measure, compare, evaluate, and understand the improvement points of each establishment," commented Guillermo Delgado, Manager of Responsible and Sustainable Business at Syngenta for South Latin America.
Through the crops, "the producer fixes and absorbs more carbon than it generates. This year, we obtained the baseline to start outlining some reduction and mitigation strategies," said Delgado.
Cropwise, a key tool
The use of the digital platform Cropwise was the fundamental tool to facilitate this first year of measurement. Through its use, producers could measure productive parameters and incorporate carbon footprint measurements quickly and easily.
"To facilitate this accompaniment, the Technical Service and Digital Solutions teams at Syngenta prepared ourselves to give the best support to producers and learn together during this first stage," highlighted Virginia Passaniti, Digital Solutions Manager at Syngenta.
To work on improvement points in future campaigns, "the data allows us to have traceability and be able to compare," added Passaniti.
With sustainability integrated into its business strategy, Syngenta provides technologies, services, and training to accompany producers in emitting minimal carbon emissions, thus contributing to reducing the climate footprint.
