Jiangsu Repont Agrochemical Co., Ltd.(Repont) has recently secured EU equivalent registration approval for its tribenuron-methyl technical, a significant breakthrough that will further solidify Repont's leading position in the global tribenuron-methyl market.
Tribenuron-methyl is a systemic, selective, and highly effective sulfonylurea herbicide for cereal crops, first developed by DuPont in the United States in 1984. This product can be absorbed and translocated through the stems, leaves, and roots of weeds, killing them by inhibiting the biosynthesis of certain amino acids. Due to the excellent tolerance of cereal crops to tribenuron-methyl, it is primarily used in crops such as wheat and barley, effectively controlling a wide range of broadleaf weeds.
Since the expiration of China's tribenuron-methyl patent in 2002, its domestic production has rapidly captured the market. Despite challenges from weed resistance, it remains crucial in wheat field weed control, often mixed with other active ingredients including fluoroglycofen, carfentrazone-ethyl, and fluroxypyr.
According to Phillips McDougall's 2020 data, mainland China is the largest market for tribenuron-methyl, valued at about $50.21 million, followed by the EU at $33.45 million. Other significant markets include Russia ($13.14 million) and Turkey ($12.65 million). AgroPages data shows China exported 1,015 tons of tribenuron-methyl in 2019, worth $27.64 million. The main export destinations include Russia ($7.83 million), Greece ($1.91 million), Indonesia ($1.78 million), Ukraine ($1.72 million), and Turkey ($1.39 million).
Repont, established in 2000, specializes in sulfonylurea herbicides. With production bases in Jiangsu Rudong and Gansu (Gansu Kangbasi Biotechnology Co., Ltd), the company has a 5,000-ton technical capacity (3,000 tons of sulfonylureas) and a 10,000-ton formulation capacity (6,000 tons of sulfonylureas).
Currently, Repont's tribenuron-methyl accounts for over 50% of the global market share. The company holds domestic registrations for the technical and two formulations (10% WP and 75% WG).
Internationally, Repont has over 400 overseas registration resources. The tribenuron-methyl EU equivalent registration will support Repont’s European market expansion and demonstrate its product quality and R&D capabilities.
A Repont spokesperson stated: "Obtaining EU equivalent registration for tribenuron-methyl is a crucial milestone in our internationalization strategy. We will continue to increase R&D investment and improve product quality, contributing to global agricultural sustainability."
