BASF has announced to AgroPages the launch of a new line of adjuvants, named Agnique® BioHance, which has been developed to increase the effectiveness of biological pesticides.
″Adjuvants are safe chemical compounds to be applied with biological agents and will improve the action of biopesticides and biodefensives, supporting more sustainable, productive, and environmentally responsible agriculture,″ explains André Karadi, who is responsible for field application adjuvants for BASF in South America. He said, ″adjuvants improve the performance of biological organisms as crop protectors.″
BASF explains that adjuvants for biologicals are crucial for increasing efficiency or modifying specific properties of the solution. The goal is to facilitate the application or minimize possible external factors that can compromise the performance and application of microorganism-based pesticides, such as contamination by pathogenic organisms, natural microbial growth, nutrient variation, moisture interference, degradation caused by solar radiation, and even the deposition form of the product when applied to crops. These solutions are biologically or plant-derived, biodegradable, eligible for labeling, and contribute effectively to sustainability.
According to Kline & Company’s biopesticides database and trends report from August 2023, the use of biologicals is projected to grow.
BASF offers a portfolio of over 60 products focused on bacteria and fungi. The company claims to have developed protocols to test the compatibility and performance of adjuvants with biopesticides, which have been confirmed through germination, greenhouse, and field studies with positive results.
The adjuvants from the Agnique® BioHance line have shown effective results in trials for pathogens such as downy mildew, powdery mildew, scab, white mold, gray mold, leaf spots, rust, bacterial spot, and late blight.
Using between 0.5% and 1.0% of Agnique BioHance in biologicals can achieve results comparable to, and in some cases superior to, when only traditional chemical pesticides are used. Examples include Agnique® BioHance 100 for controlling sweet corn rust or Agnique® BioHance 200 for controlling gray mold in strawberries.
