BASF showcases its low-carbon concepts, innovative technologies and solutions along the value chain at the first Shanghai International Carbon Neutrality Expo in Technologies, Products and Achievements (Carbon Expo), empowering green development of various sectors in China.
"Accounting for half of the global chemical market, China is a strategic market and growth engine for BASF," said Dr. Jeffrey Lou, President and Chairman of BASF in Greater China. "We are pleased to introduce our roadmap to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 at the Carbon Expo. With our innovative and low-carbon technologies and solutions, BASF is committed to enabling the transformation of the chemical industry and supporting sustainable development in China."
Leading the journey to carbon neutrality with innovative technologies and products
As one of the world's leading chemical companies, BASF makes its sustainability
commitments along the value chain – from responsible procurement, safe and efficient production, to offering sustainable solutions to its customers.
Responsible procurement: BASF strives to procure renewable energy power and raw materials with low carbon footprints, such as palm oil, castor oil, and alanine produced by biological fermentation processes. In addition, BASF responsibly manages its supply chain and actively promotes the sustainability assessment among suppliers to help improve their sustainability performance.
Safe and efficient production: BASF promotes the development and application of climate-friendly technologies through continuous innovation. At the Carbon Expo, BASF showcases the research and development progress of several low-carbon production processes, including the world’s first demonstration plant for large-scale electrically heated steam cracker furnaces and methane pyrolysis for hydrogen production.
Leading sustainable solutions: To meet the ever-increasing demand on sustainable products in China, BASF presents its advanced solutions in various industries, including battery materials, automotive, construction, renewable energy, and agriculture. These solutions contribute to the low carbon footprint value chain of many industries in China.
One of the highlights at the Carbon Expo is that BASF showcases its interactive model for the digital solution to calculate the Product Carbon Footprints (PCFs) for the first time. With this solution, BASF provides its ″Cradle-to-Gate″ PCFs for nearly 45,000 products available globally, creating transparency of product carbon footprint and enabling its customers to calculate and reduce the carbon footprint of their own products.
Publishing Greater China Report for the 15th consecutive year, reporting a continuous reduction in carbon emissions for six years in a row
BASF publishes its BASF in Greater China Annual Report 2022. It is the 15th consecutive year that BASF has published an annual integrated report in Greater China to review its achievements across the three dimensions of sustainability – economy, environment, and society.
In 2022, BASF Greater China achieved sales of approximately €11.6 billion, and the total greenhouse gas emissions resulting from its production and operation
amounted to 1,176,000 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 0.5% (2021: 1,182,000 tons). This is the sixth consecutive year that BASF has reduced carbon emissions from its operation in Greater China. This reduction was achieved by optimizing efficiency through digitalization and deploying new technologies, as well as by increasing the use of renewables in the energy supply.
″In 2022, BASF Greater China demonstrated resilience in a challenging market environment. We ensured safe production, timely product delivery, and business continuity. Looking ahead, I expect to work with all stakeholders to create a sustainable future in China," said Lou.

Joining the Green Power Alliance of SCIP, supporting the green transformation of chemical industry parks
Today, the Green Power Alliance of Shanghai Chemical Industry Park (SCIP) launched and has completed its first green power trade. The Alliance is initiated by SCIP and BASF and co-founded by several enterprises in SCIP with great support from State Grid Shanghai Municipal Electrical Power Company, Beijing Power Exchange Center and Shanghai Power Exchange Center. It aims to introduce a long-term, stable, and competitive green power supply for the Alliance enterprises and promote the green transformation of chemical industry parks with scale effect.
In the first purchase, part of the alliance members including BASF purchased green electricity from an onshore wind power project in North China, with a total transaction of nearly 14 million kWh.
"Win-win cooperation paves the way for green development. We are delighted to work together with different stakeholders to launch the Green Power Alliance of SCIP. A long-term and stable supply of green power is crucial for BASF Greater China to contribute to our global climate protection goals. We hope to leverage more resources and synergy to jointly promote low-carbon practices and green transition in the chemical industry," said Jan Peter Bredehöft, Senior Vice President, Operations and Site Management of BASF Greater China.
BASF has actively participated in green power trading on a large scale in China. By the end of 2022, the company is the largest green power purchaser in the Yangtze
River Delta region and the second largest in China. BASF Greater China's annual purchase amount of green power reached 330 million kWh in 2022.
