Brazilian prosecutors against aerial spraying in northeast plateau
Date:07-11-2011
Brazilian prosecutors have called on the Federal Court to ban aerial pesticide spraying over a plateau in the country’s northeast, newspaper Diário do Nordeste reported.
The request made by Federal and state prosecutors was against fly-over pesticide use on the Apodi Plateau, which crosses the states of Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte, between Limoeiro do Norte and Quixeré.
Scientific research showed the practice was leading to water contamination in the region which affected workers, the story reported.
The preliminary injunction has required the immediate suspension of aerial spraying, which will affect several companies in the major fruit-growing region, including Del Monte Fresh Produce Brasil, Fazenda Frutacor, Tropical Nordeste Fruit Agroindústria and Agrícola Famosa, the story reported.
