The Brazilian Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) determined, on June 21, the preventive suspension of the import, production, distribution, and commercialization of the active ingredient Carbendazim and its technical products.
The suspension should last until the conclusion of the toxicological reassessment process of the pesticide Carbendazim, as determined by the court and procedures of the reassessment process by Anvisa.
Carbendazim is among the 20 most used agrochemicals in Brazil. There are currently 41 formulated products and 33 technical products based on the substance with active registration in Brazil, divided among 24 companies (Check the list below).
According to data released by Anvisa, the reassessment can lead to banning the product or its maintenance in the market, with the adoption of measures to reduce the risks arising from its use.
Sometimes, it may also be decided to keep the product on the market without any new recommendations. The toxicological aspects that motivated the reassessment of Carbendazim are the suspected mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, developmental toxicity, and reproductive toxicity.
