Syngenta Seeds Canada, Inc. introduces a Canadian first in multi-level protection against soybean cyst nematodes (SCN). Available for viewing in NK field evaluation trials this year, new NK Brand Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield S14-M4 is the first soybean variety in Canada to include Peking resistance for unsurpassed management for multiple nematode races.
Soybean cyst nematodes are microscopic threadlike worms that burrow into the soybean root system to draw nutrients from the plant. SCN infestation can cause plant stress, suppress root and shoot growth, and impact yields.
"With S14-M4, growers have another source of resistance against a different race spectrum of soybean cyst nematode," says Don McClure, Breeding Project Lead for Soybeans at Syngenta Seeds Canada. "Other varieties have only PI88788 type resistance. If only one source of protection is relied on, then the pest will overcome resistance over time. In 2008 and 2009 studies in Highgate and Leamington, Ontario showed that resistant varieties out-yielded susceptible varieties by up to 53 percent."
Registration has been granted for S14-M4 and will be available for Canadian soybean growers during the 2012 spring planting season.
S14-M4 is part of the NK Brand Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield lineup, which offers high-yielding, herbicide tolerant soybeans bred to stand up to disease, pests and drought stress, and designed to yield in diverse growing conditions.
