The United States has approved the use of a pesticide, which has been banned in the EU since 2003 because of the danger it poses to health and due to its ecotoxicity, to combat the Asian psylla that spreads the bacteria that causes greening or HLB in Florida citrus fruits.
The product approved is the aldicarb pesticide and nematicide (which is better known by the brand name Temik®). This systemic pesticide was used in the EU for a few years to combat aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies.
The North American authorities have also approved the use of streptomycin (antibiotic) in orange trees against the bacteria that kills them.
