The Brazilian Federal Official Gazette published on Friday November 27 that 42 formulated pesticides were registered under the Act No. 65 of the Department of Plant Protection and Agricultural Defense Secretariat Agricultural Inputs. Of this total, 13 are biological control pesticides, 6 of which are authorized for use in organic agriculture.
Until today, 76 low impact pesticides have been registered In 2020. This is, to date, the largest number of product registrations in the same year.
“With a month to go until the end of the year, 2020 is already outlined as the green year in terms of registering sustainable biopesticides. This is a record that contributes immensely to the sustainability of Brazilian agriculture,” stated the General Coordinator of Agrochemicals and related products, Bruno Breitenbach.
Products considered to be of low impact have biological, microbiological, semi-chemical, biochemical, phytochemical and growth-regulating, active ingredients, and can be authorised for use in various cases in organic agriculture. At the same time, they contribute to increasing the sustainability of national agriculture, as phytosanitary products with biological control agents in their formulation and are alternatives for rural producers in the fight against pests.
Of the 13 products registered on Friday, 11 are composed of microorganisms such as Beauveria bassiana, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens or Metarhizium anisopliae and Hirsutella thompsonii, biological agents of pest control to protect Brazilian crops. Two other records are based on gibberellic acid, a plant hormone that acts as a plant growth regulator.
All products use active ingredients previously registered in the country and some contain more than one active ingredient. The registration of generic pesticides is important to decrease market concentration and increase competition, which results in fairer trade and lower production costs for Brazilian agriculture.
The products were analyzed and approved by the Ministry of Agriculture, Ibama and Anvisa, according to scientific criteria and in line with the best international practices.
