Global Market
Spinosad is a highly effective biopesticide developed by Dow AgroScience (now Corteva) in 1995. In 2017, the global sales of Spinosad formulations totaled 463.12 tons, and the sales amount reached US$280 million.
Spinetoram is an upgraded product of Spinosad with higher insecticidal activity and a longer residual effect. In 2014, global sales of Spinetoram reached $220 million, with its international demand exceeding 200 tons. Its main markets are Brazil, the United States and Mexico.
The Spinosad compound patent expires in China in 2007, expires in 2009 in Japan, Australia, and the United Kingdom, and technical product manufacture patent expires in 2015 in the US.
Future opportunity
At present, the global annual demand for Spinosad is about 700 tons, with a market value of 65 million US dollars. Spinosad and Spinetoram combine the safety of bio-pesticides with the quick-acting properties of chemical pesticides, have a wide spectrum of insecticides, and are less likely to develop resistance. Some countries open green channels for fast registration. The production process of Spinosad is more environmentally friendly, thus the production will be more stable.
China Production & Export
The production process of Spinosad is difficult, and in addition to the obtain of the strains, the fermentation broth is also difficult to prepare. At present, there is only one company in China has commercialized production of Spinosad.
From 2017 to 2018, Argentina is the only destination country of China’s Spinosad export, with an amount of only more than 200,000 US dollars and one exporter only. 2019 till now, the number of exporter increased to two, and the destination country increased to four, including Argentina, Turkey, the United States, and Uruguay, amounting to 670,000 US dollars in value.
