New fungicide varieties field tested in China over last three year

Since 2015, the field trials of some 1,600 fungicides were conducted by 500 manufacturers, revealing that the Chinese fungicide market has continued to grow.

Manufacturers are still highlighting their level of interest in fungicide registrations, reflected by their research and development of novel fungicides.

This report summarizes the field trials conducted over the last three years, covering 19 fungicides containing novel active ingredients that were applied to 19 crops to prevent and control 34 kinds of insect pests. Five of the products are novel SDHI inhibitors, accounting for 38.5% of new chemical pesticides. The trials revealed the beneficial features of these fungicides, which include efficiency, safety and broad fungicidal spectrums.

SDHI inhibitors and triazole fungicides remain a leading focus of research and development, accounting for 31.8% and 13.6%, respectively, of the field trials of 22 new active ingredients conducted recently.

Due to the growing issue of resistance to chemical pesticides and the declining use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, the use of biopesticides, such as microbial pesticides and botanical pesticides, is increasing. However, biopesticide research and production are confronted with many difficulties. For instance, as the active ingredients of botanical pesticides are relatively complicated, it is difficult to detect and test exact ingredients. The contents of active ingredients in plants will also change with the environment and climate conditions, making product quality standardization a challenge. Lower active ingredient contents can also cause difficulties in the separation and extraction processes, resulting in higher production costs. Additionally, biopesticide control effects are generally low while costs are high, restricting their use in agricultural production.
