AgroPages was present at the opening of the 42nd Expointer, the largest agribusiness fair in Latin America, which is taking place this week in the city of Porto Alegre, Southern Brazil.
We spoke exclusively with Senator Luis Carlos Heinze from the Progressive Party, who is an agronomist and is a leading politician involved in the Brazilian agribusiness sector.
According to Heinze, Brazil currently has a unique opportunity, not only in the agribusiness sector but also in all other sectors. “We had never been able to implement social security reform like the one we have now. This year should also be the year of tax reform, which is very important for Brazil. Labor reform is also very important. It was started by the previous government, but it will progress forward now, as changes to laws will stimulate the creation of new jobs. This will help develop the country, which is not yet walking as there are many obstacles,” he said.
According to Heinze, this progress is happening because the government of President Jair Bolsonaro is enabling it to happen.
“I have seen extremely positive signs for the agribusiness sector. The Ministry of Environment is now making it easier for agribusiness companies to do business, and it is no longer hurting. The Bolsonaro government is still facilitating infrastructure initiatives, by speeding up environmental permits in Ibama related to the construction of hydroelectric power plants,” he added.
“Minister Tereza Cristina is also showing the world that many natural environments are not being destroyed, as many NGOs want the world to believe. They have an interest in doing this, as well as our international competitors in the agribusiness sector. Brazil has the largest tropical agricultural sector on the planet, and our minister is showing the world that it is a country that preserves nature,” Heinze stressed.
“We are also demystifying the issue of pesticides. We have a new law on pesticides, which the current minister, Tereza Cristina, worked on when she was a federal deputy. I also contributed to it myself. It this legislation is passed, it will be one of many important developments for Brazilian agriculture,” he said in conclusion.
AgroPages attended the event and distributed its latest magazine, titled, “
2019 Latin America Focus.” Readers are welcome to download the digital magazine.
