EU proposes not to renew approval of methiocarb
Date:04-26-2019
The European Commission has proposed non-renewal of the approval of methiocarb.
Existing authorised plant protection products containing methiocarb will be withdrawn from the market. The non-approval is based on the first evaluation of the substance for use as a pesticide active substance in the EU under Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009. The substance was formerly approved under Directive 91/414/ EEC.
Following non approval and the expiry of all grace periods for stocks of products containing this substance, separate action may be taken on MRLs and a separate notification will be made in accordance with SPS procedures.
Methiocarb is a carbamate pesticide used since the 1960s to control snails, slugs, mites, thrips, aphids, leafhoppers, fruit flies, & biting insects; & some soil pests of field crops. It is also used as a bird repellent on fruit crops. The sales of methiocarb globally are around USD 33 million.
