Brazil CTNBio releases Dow AgroSciences’ herbicide tolerant cotton

 

The Brazilian National Technical Biosafety Commission (CTNBio) has approved the planting, in Brazil, of genetically modified (GM) cotton from Dow AgroSciences with multiple tolerances and resistance. Still without a commercial name, this cotton is being released for planting in experimental fields, aiming at evaluations of agronomic feasibility.

 

The Authorization for Planned Release in the Environment (LPMA) of this Dow AgroSciences transgenic was approved at the 213rd CTNBio Ordinary Meeting. Genetically modified cotton confers lepidopteran control through events DAS-81910-7 x DAS-21023-5 x DAS-24236-5 x COT102 and cotton DAS-21023-5 x DAS-24236-5 x COT102. Cotton expresses Cry proteins 1F, Cry1Ac, Vip3A19 for insect resistance; AAD-12 and PAT - for tolerance to 2,4-D herbicides and ammonium glufosinate, respectively.

 

The test will be held in the municipalities of Mogi Mirim (São Paulo state), Indianópolis (Minas Gerais state), Rio Verde (Goiás state) and Cascavel (Paraná state). The total area of the LPMA will be 6,864.00 square meters and the GMO area of 2,520.00 square meters. The experiment will be monitored for 6 months after harvesting. CTNBio considered that this activity "is not potentially causing significant degradation of the environment or of human and animal health.

 

CTNBio clarified that this extract does not exempt the applicant from compliance with other legislation in force in the country, applicable to the subject of the application. The full text of this Technical Opinion is filed in the CTNBio.
