The Scientific Manager at Monsanto Brasil, Guilherme Cruz, said during Expointer 2018 that products based on glyphosate were not yet suspended in Brazil. According to him, the Union has a deadline of 30 days to apply for the suspension, which would last until the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) reevaluated the active ingredient.
“It is important to clarify that, at this moment, products based on glyphosate are not yet suspended in Brazil. Since August 3, when the injunction was issued, the Union had 30 days to suspend the registration of products based on glyphosate. So, we are still counting time; we are continuing to sell the products and the producer can apply for the suspension,” Cruz explained to Agropages.
On the occasion, the substitute Judge of the 7th Rod of the Federal District, Luciana Raquel Tolentino de Moura, attended to a request from the Federal Public Ministry asking that all glyphosate-based products be banned in the country. In this sense, Cruz explained that all measures should be taken by the agencies and Monsanto was just awaiting the decision.
“Regarding the injunction, Monsanto will not take any attitude directly because the request does not cite Monsanto in any way nor questions the safety of the product. We know that we already have a movement of the Ministry of Agriculture and the General Union Law, so we are waiting and respecting the judicial decision,” he said.
The manager also cited that the glyphosate patent fell some years ago and nowadays, it is not just Monsanto that works with the product. Therefore, he guaranteed that the company respected all the judicial decisions with regard to the case. “If the glyphosate registration falls, we will abide by the decision and, certainly, at that moment, we will leave commercialization, production and will tell farmers to follow the same path,” he concluded.
