Rotam introduces Saddler 350 SC insecticide against nematode on coffee

The new insecticide, Saddler 350 SC (thiodicarb) of Rotam do Brasil, can be an alternative for coffee growers to fight against nematodes of coffee root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne exigua). According to the maker, it belongs to the chemical group oxime methylcarbamate and has already been used in the seed treatment of crops such as rice, kidney beans, corn, and soybeans. 

 

In order to get the insecticide approval for coffee, Rotam held a study in a farm located in the municipality of Garçoa, the countryside of São Paulo, and proved that Saddler 350 SC is effective on the cultivar. According to the company’s marketing coordinator, Lucas Ferreira, the control of this nematode with the application of the new pesticide was 96% upon the evaluation of the first application of the product and 95% on the second application. “In addition, the production was 55.78 bags of 60 kilograms per hectare, 29% more compared to the 43.23 bags of the testimony,” said the Rotam representative. 

 

Nematodes are small worms that cause great damage in Brazilian agriculture, mostly to coffee, attacking the roots of the plant. These worms can drastically reduce the coffee production by up to 50% reaching the root system, where it causes necroses and cracks, affecting the development and plant production. In some cases, the attack can be so violent that it is capable of causing the plant’s death.
