Pesticides smuggling may soon attract heavy penalties in Brazil
Date:01-08-2018
A bill has been introduced in Brazil under Project No. 2079 that deems robbery, theft, bribery, and smuggling of pesticides as heinous crimes.
The aim is to make penalties heavier for such practices in an attempt to curb escalation of such offenses, which have increased and cause significant losses to the farm business.
The bill was introduced by Representative Jerônimo Goergen, and received a favorable legal opinion, said Representative Alceu Moreira. The proposal is ready for voting in the Justice, Citizenship, and Constitution of the House of Representatives.
The bill was presented for a public discussion at the request of Senator Ana Amélia on November 24, 2017, at the Agricultural and Agrarian Reform Commission of the Federal Senate.
The Brazilian Association of Chemical Industries, present during the discussion, highlighted the importance of this issue and the necessity of a joint action by the Brazilian government, the industry and various associations.
The bill now awaits the results of the deliberations presented to the Commission, and after that it will be put to a vote in the House floor and then sent to the Senate for final approval.
