Welayta-Sodo University discovers pesticide against fall army-worm

Two researchers from Wolayta-Sodo University have discovered a new pesticide that can eliminate fall army worm or domestically known as ‘American Temech.’
Communication and International Relations Director with the University, Teshale Tegene said that the two researchers, Dr Dawit Dalega and Dr Ashenafi Abebe have found out a new pesticide , after two and half months of research.
According to Teshale, several consecutive examinations have been conducted using different laboratories of the university to verify the killing capacity of the new pesticide.
So far, the researchers have tested the new pesticide in five weredas of Welayta zone , Teshale underscored. The pesticide has given remarkable results in the farm lands in Welayta zone, he reiterated.
Teshale also noted that the newly discovered pesticide has the capacity to eradicate smaller army worms within 3 to 5 minutes and the bigger worms within 30 minutes period.
Furthermore , the university has started activities to test the pesticide in different ecological areas that are widely affected by the fall army worm across the country, he underlined.
Currently, the fall army worm has infested and caused serious damage on corn plants in six regions of the country, Walta learnt.
