MOA releases list of GMOs certified for imports into China

By Think Real - On 14 June, 2017, the Ministry of Agriculture of the People’s Republic of China (MOA) released the 2017 list of GMOs (=genetically modified organism) certified for imports into China. In total, 16 products, such as soybean, corn and cotton produced by Monsanto, Bayer, Syngenta and Dow AgroSciences, and used as raw materials for processing, were allowed, effective from 12 June, 2017 to 12 June, 2020.

At this point, the Chinese government intends to improve the productivity of farms and meanwhile to build the public’s confidence in such organisms. Though the government has announced the safety of the certified GMOs, it is still very cautious about the imports. Recently the deal between China National Chemical Corporation and Syngenta has aroused public’s attention again.
 
According to the Regulations on Administration of Agricultural Genetically Modified Organisms Safety, the foreign companies with intention to export GMOs to China as raw materials, should applied to the MOA for GMO safety certificates and the GMOs should be tested for environmental and eating safety. If the GMOs are vital, they should be filed, covering sources, storage and transportation; in addition, they should be controlled for safety, so as to guarantee that they will not penetrate into the environment.
