Bejo lettuce varieties resistant to new Bremia race BL:33EU
Date:05-05-2017
On Monday, May 1, the International Bremia Evaluation Board for the EU (IBEB-EU) officially designated a new race of Bremia 33, also known as new downy mildew, in lettuce. We are happy to announce that with only a few exceptions all of our varieties with resistance BL16-32 are resistant to Bremia BL: 33EU.
The IBEB-EU evaluated all Bremia races found in 2016 and earlier. Once again, many outbreaks were caused by new Bremia races with only local importance. However, one race has spread to most European countries and IBEB-EU has decided to designate this isolate as the new race BL: 33EU.
Gerhard Voelkel, Bejo’s Crop Manager for lettuce, says: “Our assortment in Iceberg, Batavia, Butterhead and Babyleaf in general demonstrates strong resistances. The resistance to Bremia BL:33EU across this assortment confirms to me that we are performing particularly well on resistance breeding”.
