Germany supermarket chains sets own stricter limits for glyphosate residues
Date:03-09-2017
In a letter to its suppliers, Germany supermarket chains Aldi Süd establishes its own residue maximum values for glyphosate, which is maximum 20% of legal maximum in EU.
Aldi Süd writes in the letter: "Possible health risks of glyphosate as well as the effects on the environment are highly controversial ... For this reason, according to the ALARA principle (as low as reasonably achievable), measures should be taken to reduce the glyphosate content in the private brands which to be delivered to Aldi Süd. "
In the letter Aldi Süd sets the concrete targets:
• If the maximum EU residue level is 0.1 mg/kg, the Aldi suppliers are to reach a maximum of 10 percent, i.e. 0.01 mg/kg.
• If the EU residue level is at most 0.05 to 0.09 mg/kg, the suppliers should reach a maximum of 20 percent of this.
Where there are no EU maximum values, Aldi Süd provides the following guidelines:
• Maximum 0.2 mg/kg for breakfast cereals
• Maximum 0.05 mg/kg for all other products
