Argentina estimates 27% increase in corn planting in 2016-17
Date:11-29-2016
According to the weekly report of the Buenos Aires Cereal Exchange, in the 2016-17 season, corn planting has attained 40.3% of total estimated area of 4,900,000 ha. The estimated area of corn is 27% higher than the previous planting season of 2015-2016 at 3,850,000 ha.
The inter-annual advance was only 0.5 percentage points, marking a year-on-year improvement of 3.1%.
The greatest sowing progress in corn was in the south of Buenos Aires and La Pampa province due to low temperatures, which delayed planting during the month of October.
At the country level, the most advanced regions are located in the Central-East zones of Entre Ríos, Centro-Norte de Santa Fe, Núcleo North and Corrientes.
On the other hand, most of the early plots have very good sanitary conditions and excellent water reserves in the profiles.
In NOA region, last week's rainfall enriched the soil to start corn planting in the coming weeks.
In San Luis area, the early batches had differentiating leaves (V3-V6) under good conditions. In the Central-East zone of Entre Ríos, the first lot of female flowering (R1) was reported. Towards the zone of the Center-North of Santa Fe, hail fall was reported in specific sectors of the region.
In the province of Córdoba, nitrogen re-fertilizations were generalized, taking advantage of the excellent water status of the soil profiles. At present, the problems of water excesses still persist in sectors of the southern provinces.
In the North Núcleo Region, problems of tolerant and resistant weed escapes were identified. In parallel, in the western areas of Buenos Aires-North of La Pampa, Cuenca del Salado and the Center of Buenos Aires, the planting of early plots concluded.
In the Southeast of Buenos Aires and South of La Pampa-Southwest areas of Buenos Aires, the low temperatures last month delayed the addition of plots.
These low temperatures partially affected the plants which were planted at the beginning of the planting season.
