Market insights on Chilean and Peruvian agriculture
Date:09-20-2016
The Chilean agrochemical market earned retailers some US$450 million in sales.
Demand is driven mainly by fruit exports, followed by exports of cereals and potatoes. Distributors sell directly to end consumers, resulting in the distribution chain becoming more concentrated in the last five years. The main distributors in the country are Copeval, Coagra, Martinez & Valdivieso, Cals, and Cooprinsem.
The Chilean company Agricola National S.A.C(ANASAC) says that In Chile the market is quite competitive, and all transnational agrochemical providers are present. Bayer is the market leader, followed by Syngenta and Anasac in second place.

The Peruvian agricultural market comprises two major segments: agroindustry (45% market share) and traditional (55% market share).
Agroindustry produces table grapes, avocados, asparagus, capsicums, citrus fruits, and blueberries. This segment is growing at around 8% annually. Growers in this segment are focused on delivering high-quality products for export. As a result, they prefer to buy high-quality agrochemical products, mostly from Syngenta, Bayer, BASF, DuPont, and Dow. However, more generic products rather than popular brands are used on some of the crops, such as asparagus and avocado, because of their low prices.
Traditional crops include rice, potatoes, corn, sugarcane, tomatoes, and other vegetables. This segment has declined over the last three years by some 7% annually. Some reasons for this include the low earnings from the harvest, the drought in the South, and climate change due to El Nino phenomenon. However, it is hoped that the situation will improve next year.
The Peruvian company Tecnología Química y Comercio S.A. (TQC Group) notes that in general, the Peruvian agrochemical market is expected to maintain the same level of sales in 2016 as it earned last year and to grow at around 8% to 10% next year.
