Argentina approves new GMO corn product

Argentina’s Ministry of Agriculture approved the commercialization of a new genetically modified corn developed by DuPont Pioneer Argentina to reduce insecticide applications. Minister Ricardo Buryaile has indicated that “one of the main goals is the generation of added value, which biotechnology is a key tool that will allow us to grant sustainability for the current production model”. The authorization was done through the Resolution 25/2016, published in the Official Gazette.

Minister Buryaile added: “It means more food for the world and this way the food security is guaranteed”.

This is the first biotechnological product approved by the Ministry. The product provides protection against plagues that threat corn production in many regions of the country. The characteristics introduced by biotechnological measures not only ensure better yields, but allow to obtain better quality grain, minimizing the incidence of fungi and mycotoxins derived from insect attacks.

The Aggregate Value Secretary, Néstor Rouler, has signed the resolution that grants commercial authorization of corn product and pointed out that “the biotechnological developments are the opportunity to reach new markets and our obligation is to bring a framework that promotes development and adoption of responsible new technologies”. Besides, the product grants resistance to Lepidoptera and glufosinate ammonium, added to glyphosate tolerance.
