OSF seeks USDA’s approval for Arctic Fuji apple
Date:01-22-2016
Okanagan Specialty Fruit (OSF) seeks USDA approval for their latest release in of the non-browning apple varieties. ‘Arctic Fuji’ follows in the footsteps of OSF’s first non-browning apple varieties, ‘Arctic Golden,’ and ‘Arctic Granny.’
‘Arctic Golden’ and ‘Arctic Granny’ were approved for commercial sale in February 2015. Recently, OSF formally submitted a petition to USDA requesting the deregulation of Arctic Fuji, the next non-browning variety.
Developed using the same techniques such as silencing polyphenol oxidase, the enzyme that initiates browning as other Arctic apple varieties. Arctic Fuji apples have been grown and tested in field trial orchards for more than a decade. The petition being reviewed by USDA contains substantial data collected over many years that demonstrates the safety and healthfulness of ‘Arctic Fuji.’
