Australia to approve BASF’s insecticide metaflumizone
Date:12-07-2015
The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has proposed metaflumizone as new insecticide active ingredient and the BASF’s end-use product Siesta Granular Ant Bait (0.63 g/kg metaflumizone).
Metaflumizone, developed by Nihon Nohyaku, belongs to a new IRAC (Insecticide Resistance Action Committee) Mode of Action (MoA) Chemical Group, 22B. Metaflumizone is claimed to be the only sodium channel blocker insecticide (SCBI) that does not require metabolism for bioactivation. It has been shown to be highly effective against harmful insect in the Lepidoptera and Coleoptera orders as well as those that have acquired tolerance to other insecticide, giving rise to expectation that it would become a key component in the pest management plans of farmers.
Nihon Nohyaku registered and sells metaflumizone (trade name: Axel Flowable) in many countries. It also cooperated with BASF to co-promote metaflumizone.
Siesta Granular Ant Bait is a ready-to-use granulated bait (oil bait) containing 0.63 g/kg metaflumizone. The product is proposed to be used to control nuisance ant species (such as coastal brown ant, black ant and red imported fire ant) on gardens, golf courses, industrial areas, lawns, parks, turf, sports grounds and other non-crop land and non-food bearing nursery stock. The use rate is 3–5 g of the formulated product per 20 m2 , equivalent to 0.950 to 1.583 g metaflumizone/ha. A maximum of 2.5 kg product per ha is not exceeded if individual mounds are treated.
APVMA will accept comments on this proposal before December 30th, 2015.
