Date:08-06-2015
The crop protection division of BASF, which provides innovative solutions for crop protection, seed treatment and biological control, awarded with the Top Science 2015 for four projects conducted by Latin American agricultural researchers and producers. The company deems that these producers demonstrated efficacy and benefits to control diseases on different crops.
The announcement of the winners was given during an event in Costa Rica in July and the four prizes were elected from a group of 20 successful initiatives related to the development of scientific research to increase protection levels, productivity, quality and profitability of crops.
The prizes took into account the strategies to manage hard-to-control diseases, programs to control insects, productivity increases through plant health improvement, as well as biological strategies for optimization and seed treatment.
The projects which won the Top Science 2015 for Latin America and the Caribbean correspond to a Guatemalan producer, which developed a control system for the Coffee Rust, a project by Jamaican producer to manage citrus greening and two projects in Mexican against the potato scab and another to protect alfalfa crops.
The competition initiated by BASF celebrated its eighth year in the region and seeks to encourage and recognize the works of professionals of agriculture.
According to BASF's Gregorio Ordoñez, these initiatives were supported by the company's products, designed as fungicides to control diseases, but acting to activate nitrate reductase (an enzyme that regulates levels of nitrogen) on the plant. This helps the crop to have a higher growth efficiency and strength.
"We do a portfolio offer to producers and investigators to support good practices on crops during a period of six months, we will do an evaluation of results soon, where the most successful products are chosen," details Ordoñez.
