Japanese agriculture
Japan consists of a long chain of islands covering southern subtropical to subarctic climate. Due to much rain and warm condition, wide variety of crops are cultivated. Paddy rice is planted in a half of Japanese field. Very labor and material intensive agriculture is conducted in Japan, thus Japan uses much pesticide as much of 350 billion yen/year.

Japan plants a wide range of crops on a long chain of islands from subtropical to subarctic condition,and rice is major crop and the most important market as pesticide market. The planting areas of major crops in recent years are as follow:
Pesticide total market in Japan
Sales of insecticides and herbicides respectively account for about 30% of the total, and fungicide sales represent 20% of the total. Additionally, premix of insecticide and fungicide in sales make up 10%. Premix is used mainly for rice. The details are as follow:

For fungicide, sales in 2013 for vegetable/upland farms application contributed to 52% of the total, followed by fruit trees with 26% of the total. Herbicide sales in 2013 for paddy field rice application accounted for around 58% of the total. For insecticide, sales of vegetables/field crops represented 56% of the total, followed by fruit trees with 23%. For mixture of insecticide and fungicide, sales for paddy field rice application made up 89% of the total.
