Nufarm receives emergency registration of Intego Solo seed treatment in Canada
Date:04-09-2015
Prairie field pea growers can now tackle the most devastating new root rot in Canada, with the recent emergency use registration of Nufarm’s INTEGO Solo seed treatment (ethaboxam) for suppression of Aphanomyces euteiches.
Aphanomyces was found in an estimated 60% of pea fields in Alberta and 65% of fields in Saskatchewan in 2014. Until the emergency use registration of INTEGO Solo, growers across Western Canada have had no control method available other than removing pulse crops from their rotation.
INTEGO Solo (ethaboxam) is a Group 22 fungicide registered for pythium control and the suppression of seed rot caused by Phytophthora and Aphanomyces. With this emergency use registration, INTEGO Solo can now be used on field peas in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba in addition to the previous Canada wide registration for lentils, chickpeas, dry beans and soybeans. This seed treatment is available for commercial seed treaters with closed transfer systems and for on-farm treatment. The emergency use registration for field peas ends on March 19, 2016.
“Pulse production in Western Canada is now under serious threat from Aphanomyces – the most devastating disease in peas worldwide, according to the American Phytopathological Society,” says Graham Collier, Technical Services Manager for Western Canada with Nufarm Agriculture Inc. “Weather conditions across the prairies over the past few years have significantly increased disease pressure, and growers have been left with no control options, until this emergency use of new INTEGO Solo.”
Resting spores of Aphanomyces remain in the soil for several years, increasing in numbers every time a host crop is seeded. INTEGO Solo will help protect the roots of seedlings during early season growth stages while soil conditions are wet and favour infection by Aphanomyces. INTEGO Solo will also limit the amount of resting spores produced in fields by reducing overall levels of Aphanomyces infection.
INTEGO Solo is a fully registered product for Aphanomyces suppression in lentils, chickpeas, dry beans and soybeans. The emergency use registration applies only to field peas in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. INTEGO Solo is the only Group 22 seed treatment or fungicide registered for pulses in Canada. The emergency use registration application was supported by Alberta Pulse Growers, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, and Valent Canada Inc.
