Trifloxystrobin is a broad-spectrum fungicide with mostly preventive activity. Its function is to inhibit mitochondrial respiration by blocking the electron transfer at the Qo site of cytochrome bc1. The particular characteristics of trifloxystrobin are redistribution by superficial vapor movement and surface water, good rainfastness, and residual activity. It is active against fungi of all four classes such as Ascomycetes, Deuteromycetes, Basidiomycetes and Oomycetes, controlling powdery mildew, leaf spot and fruit diseases in the early stages of fungal development. Trifloxystrobin is often mixed with cyproconazole, propiconazole, captan, cymoxanil, tebuconazole and prothioconazole.
Trifloxystrobin was developed by Novartis (now Syngenta) and was introduced in Switzerland, South Africa and US in 1999. All rights of the product were sold to Bayer in 2000. Bayer launched trifloxystrobin in France and Germany in 2001. A mixed product Nativo (trifloxystrobin and tebuconazole) was introduced in Brazil in 2005. In 2008, Bayer launched Sphere Max (Trifloxystrobin and Cyproconazole) in Argentina and Brazil for soybean. Mixtures with penflufen as Prosper EverGol for Canola were introduced in US and Canada in 2012, and with fluopyram as Luna Sensation for use on nuts, fruits and field crops. Luna Sensation was launched in China in 2014.
Global sales of trifloxystrobin reached $615 million in in 2012. The administrative protection of trifloxystrobin in China has already expired on February 16, 2016.
