Brazil's Ibama releases pesticide production and sales surveys‏ for 2013

The Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), the country's environmental agency, has recently published national pesticide production and sales surveys for 2013.

In 2013, Brazil national production was 124,776 tons, increased greatly by 75.9% compared to 2012, whereas the production of the formulated products were 429,248 tons, down by 5.5%. The imported technical products reached to 202,419 tons, up 16% compared to 2012, while these numbers for formulated products were 429,248 tons and a 43.3% increase.

The domestic agrochemical sales reached 666,511 tons, in which formulated products account for 495,764 tons, and technical products were 170,746 tons.The sales of technical products were greatly lower than in 2012,down by 87.7%, while formulated products showed a 3.8% increase.

The Ibama also revealed the best-selling active ingredients in the country. Glyphosate again stood in the first place with 185,956 tons of sales, followed by the herbicide 2,4-D (37,131 tons), atrazine (28,395 tons), and mineral oil (28,347 tons).

The Brazilian agency released data on the pesticides based on the environmental risk degree. Class III pesticides (regarded as dangerous to the environment), represented 62.01% of the total sales in 2013, while class II (regarded as very dangerous to the environment) accounted for 31.1% of the products, followed by class IV goods (regarded as mild dangerous) with 5.68% of the total and, class I product (defined as highly dangerous) with 1%.
