Australia approves Monsanto’s TruFlex canola
Date:11-25-2014
The Australia Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has decided to approve the commercial release of Monsanto’s GM canola TruFlex Roundup Ready (MON 88302) with glyphosate tolerance. Monsanto intends to grow it in all canola growing areas in Australia.
The GM canola with similar proteins has previously been grown under limited and controlled conditions in Australia since 2011 without adverse effects on human health or environment, the authority notes. The OGTR also concludes that risks from the proposed dealings, either in the short or long term, to the health and safety of people, or the environment, are negligible. Food made from the GM canola has been assessed and approved by Food Standards Australia New Zealand as safe for human consumption. The Truflex canola has been authorized for cultivation in US, Canada, for food/feed-use in EU, Mexico, South Korea and New Zealand.
