TMG receives US patent for soybean gene resistant to Asian rust
Date:10-14-2014
The United States officially recognized the selection patent of the gene Rpp5, which brings soybean resistance to Asian rust. The technology was launched by the Brazilian company Tropical Melhoramento & Genética (TMG) and it is used on its cultivars Inox.
The information was confirmed by the Foundation for Support of Agricultural Research in Mato Grosso (MT Foundation). According to the Foundation, the patent was requested in 2007, and analyzed by the American office of trademarks and patents.
The Inox technology is used in the Cerrado region since 2008 and in the south of the country since 2011. "In the case that the cultural and chemical control are beyond the hands, the Inox plants will be protected by the gene", explained by the manager of MT Foundation, Fabiano Siqueri.
Named TMG 7161 RR and TMG 7162 RR, the Inox technology is effective against Diaporthe phaseolorum f. sp. meridionalis, Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. glycines, and Cercospora sojina. "Managed correcly, they are also highly productive and allow a reduction of production costs", said Eberson Calvo, director at TMG.
