The Brazil National Technical Commission of Biosecurity (CTNBio) approved the release for sale of two genetically-modified corns from Sygenta Seeds. The two new types of corn are the MIR604, a transgenic (a modified cry3Aa gene derived from Bt subsp tenebrionis) resistant corn rootworm pest, and the four-stacked Viptera 3111 (Bt11xMIR162xMIR604xGA21), with characteristics of herbicide (glyphosate and glufosinate) tolerance and resistance to European corn borer, and other specifics.
"These technologies are considered safe by CTNBio and, certainly, would be useful for the corn productive system in the future", said the commission president, Edivaldo Velini, on the commercial releases.
According to the rapporteur of the approval, Paulo Lee Ho, BASF introduced diverse studies and "all the analysis were done very cautiously by the company and by CTNBio ", said the researcher of Butantan Institute.
