The State Foundation of Agricultural Research (Fepagro) launched two new varieties of kidney beans, named "Garapiá" and "Triunfo", at 37th edition of Expointer. The two varieties were developed for different regions of Rio Grande do Sul, and enables 30% higher productivity than the other varieties used for comparison.
"It is a painstaking work, which considers the plant productivity, besides the nutritional and the gourmet quality of the bean", explained researcher Juarez Fernandes de Souza, who integrated the staff responsible for the development. According to him, the process took a decade.
The black bean cultivar Fepagro Triunfo has shown excellent performance with wide adaption, including increased productive potential , good level of diseases tolerance (resistance to rust, rust, powdery mildew and mosaic0, and ideal for mechanized harvesting. The mid-sized grain is excellent for cooking. The Garapiá cultivar is highlighted because of resistance to diseases, especially anthracnose, and excellent gourmet quality.
