Scientists call for ban on neonicotinoids and fipronil‏
Date:07-08-2014
An international scientific evaluation was introduced recently requesting the progressive suspension of pesticides neonicotinoids and fipronil. The researchers group that signed the study said that neonicotinoids and fipronil have collateral effects on biodiversity, including bees, butterflies, earthworms, birds and fishes.
"The proofs are very clear. We are facing a threat to the productivity of our natural and agricultural environment", mentioned Dr. Jean-Marc Bonmatin from the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, one of the authors of the study. About 800 published studies in the last 20 years were examined.
The goal is to "start to plan the progressive suppression on a world scale or, at least, formulate plans aiming to strongly reduce the usage in the world" said the author. Twenty nine international researchers specialized on systemic pesticides participated in the study, which was published in “Environmental Science and Pollution Research” journal.
According to the study, the neonicotinoids and Fipronil "are the most used agrochemcials in the world today, with a market quota estimated at 40%, even though chronic effects exist”.
Pesticides were denounced in the European Union as one of the causes of bee's population fall.
