Date:05-23-2014
Sumitomo Chemical has established a subsidiary named Sumitomo Chemical East Africa Limited in Arusha, Tanzania, to conduct market surveys and research and development on agricultural chemicals.
In Africa, the agricultural market is said to have the potential to exceed one trillion US dollars by 2030 with rising populations. Also, Africa’s uncultivated land suitable for growing food grains is 450 million hectares, accounting for more than half of the world’s total area of such land. Expecting expansion of farmland and the agricultural chemicals market, Sumitomo Chemical aims to boost its business further in Africa.
Through the new subsidiary, Sumitomo Chemical will carry out market surveys and research and development on agricultural chemicals for crops such as paddy rice and corn. After evaluating the marketability of its products, Sumitomo Chemical will sell agricultural chemicals on the African market. The company also intends to enhance its environmental health business for Africa, including insecticides for household and
public health uses.
Sumitomo Chemical has worked to strengthen and enlarge its crop protection chemicals business globally. The company will further broaden its earnings base while contributing to the improvement of agricultural crop productivity.
