EU approves seven new ais

The European Commission has announced to approve seven new active ingredients under the EU plant protection regulation (1107/2009).They are: the insecticides, Dow AgroSciences’s spinetoram and Sumitomo Chemical’s pyridalyl; the fungicides, Isagro’s valifenalate and Nissan Chemical’s amisulbrom; the plant growth regulators, Sumitomo Chemical’s S-abscisic acid and DormFresh’s 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene and Bayer CropScience’s herbicide thiencarbazone.They will be formally included in Annex I on July 1, 2014 and will expire on June 30, 2024.

For spinetoram, the member states are required to consider the risk to: aquatic and soil organisms; non-target arthropods in-field; bees during the application (overspray) and subsequently.

Pyridalyl may only be authorised for use in greenhouses with permanent structure, and member states shall pay particular attention to the risk to re-entry workers, ground water, birds, mammals and aquatic organisms.

For valifenalate, the member states are required to consider the risk to aquatic organisms. Amisulbrom approval requires the member states should consider the risk to aquatic and soil organisms. For S-abscisic acid, member states must ensure the protection of aquatic organisms.

For 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene, member states must pay particular attention to the protection of operators and of workers at re-entry and during inspection of the warehouse; the risk to aquatic organisms and fish-eating mammals if the active substance is discharged from warehouses into air and surface water without further treatment.

For thiencarbazone, the member states should consider the risk to: groundwater if the substance is applied under vulnerable geographical or climatic conditions; aquatic organisms.
