Kenya develops resistant maize seed

Kenya Seed Company and Kenya Agricultural Research Institute have developed a new variety of maize that is resistant to lethal necrosis disease.
It is a sigh of relief to farmers who have suffered losses for three consecutive years, Deputy President William Ruto said.
"The government has explored ways of tackling the lethal necrosis disease by developing a variety that is resistant in a bid to alleviate the suffering maize farmers have undergone," he said. Ruto said Kenyans should plant certified seeds to reap maximum returns.
He said the government understands agriculture is the mainstay of this country and they will ease farmers' access to farm inputs. Ruto said the State will continue to give subsidised fertiliser to farmers in every county. He said counties should open collection centres in every location.
