It is now the key period for activities related to spring plowing, but this spring Northeast China has encountered three major negative factors that have delayed agricultural fertilizer application: 1. Heavy soil preparation tasks in spring. Last autumn, the soil preparation area decreased 50% y/y. 2. Local grain prices dropped due to excessive moisture in the grain. As a result, farmers had less income and were short of capital. 3. This spring, Northeast China had a vaster winter waterlogged area, lower‐than‐usual temperatures, and 1/4 of the plowland was too wet. All these factors delayed agricultural fertilizer application.
Northeast China is a one‐harvest area, and the growing season is quite short. Leaders of the Ministry of Agriculture requested that various levels of agricultural authorities in Northeast China take urgent measures and try hard to overcome the negative factors and achieve a good harvest in 2013.
