New Zealand Environmental Protection Authority is inviting submissions on an application to import and release a fungus to protect some types of grass against pests and drought.
The application is being made by DLF Seeds Limited.
The fungus,
Neotyphodium siegelii, grows between the cells of grasses, and behaves as if it is part of the plant.
New Zealand already has similar species of fungus, but some of them can produce substances that are toxic to livestock.
The application says
Neotyphodium siegelii does not produce these toxins, and is considered safe for grazing animals.
The EPA is now seeking submissions from the public on the application.
Submissions close on 22 April.
