Certis Europe has launched a mating disruption product Cidetrak® for the control of Codling Moth (
Cydia pomonella) and Oriental Fruit Moth (
Cydia molesta) in pome fruits and stone fruits in Italy. A product fromTrécé, Cidetrak® received registration in Italy in May 2012.
Pheromones are built in to dispensers to attract and confuse the male moths so that they do not mate with the females. As this method does not affect the fertility of the female or the development of the eggs or larvae, the approach is purely preventative and the dispensers must be placed before the first flight of the moths. Mating disruption only affects the specific species of moths whose pheromones are diffused and does not disrupt natural processes so it is environmentally friendly and can be used in an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programme.
The Cidetrak dispensers are placed in the trees in March or April at a rate of 500 dispensers per hectare against Codling moth and 425 against Oriental Fruit moth. If they are working well, there should be no male moths in the monitoring traps located in the orchard throughout the season. Monitoring traps, Pherocon®, should be used with the Cidetrak® dispensers (Cidetrak CM carrying
Cydia pomonella pheromone and Cidetrak OFM carrying the pheromone
Cydia molesta) as part of a mating disruption package, to verify that the pheromones are still being released.
