LANXESS Corporation’s Saltidin® insect repellent active ingredient (registered name Icaridin Technical Insect Repellent) has been approved as an active ingredient and 20% spray formulation by the Canadian Pesticide Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA).  Saltidin® insect repellent combines long-lasting, effective protection with pleasant cosmetic properties.

In the 20% spray formulation, the Icaridin-based insect repellent is approved in Canada for seven hours of protection from mosquitoes, and eight hours of protection from ticks and black flies.  The consumer product is not oily, greasy or sticky on skin, and it smells great, too.

In the U.S., the 20% spray formulation containing Picaridin (same ingredient as Icaridin) is approved for 12 hours of effective protection from mosquitoes and ticks, including mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus.  It also repels biting flies, stable flies, black flies, gnats, chiggers, and sand flies for up to eight hours.  LANXESS will be submitting data to PMRA to extend the protection times for mosquitoes, ticks, and black flies listed on the Canadian product label.

“For years, consumers around the world have enjoyed long-lasting, effective protection made possible by our active ingredient, Saltidin® (Icaridin / Picaridin). And now, Canadian consumers will be able to enjoy the benefits of Icaridin-based repellents with confidence,” said Rainer Eischeid, Head of LANXESS Corporation’s Saltigo business unit.

Saltidin® insect repellent (also known by the names Icaridin and Picaridin) has been used worldwide since 1998 and is one of the best selling active ingredients in Europe and Australia.  The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended Saltidin® as the product of choice for malaria prophylaxis.  Saltidin® insect repellents are currently available throughout the world in various forms, including sprays, lotions, wipes and sticks, and come in concentrations ranging from five to 25 percent.
